The Beltronics GX65 is one of the best radar/laser detectors I have ever owned. I originally purchased the detector for a cross country trip from Los Angeles, to Chicago, and then down to New York City. For this trip I used my Subaru STI, a vehicle which normally gets an unfortunate amount of police “attention.”
This detector alerted me to all of the red light camera locations and was 100% accurate for all speed trap locations. The two cases which impressed me the most were: radar alert from two miles away – speed trap over a hill, around a small bend, and under an overpass near the CA/Nevada border; and a radar alert from three miles away – officer parked behind a building. Enforcement across the country was very aggressive – there was not a single state that I drove through, where I did not see fewer than five people stopped.
The GX65 also allows people to enter in speed trap locations and you will be alerted to known speed trap locations. The unit also allows you lock out false signals, although these have been rare for me. Once you get the hang of the remote unit on the power plug, you can easily mark, lockout or change the volume of the detector. You simply use one button to cycle through what you could change and another button to cycle through the settings, very user friendly.
I would be hard pressed to find fault with this detector but there are a few minor glitches. Sometimes road signs will set off the X band alarm, but you can lock out the signals. The other issue is that the plastic lens is a bit softer than I would like – mine has some wear but still works very well. I remove the detector whenever I leave the car for any length of time and this “may” have helped the detector continue performing “like new” for almost 10 months now (as of June 2010).
If you want a quality radar/laser detector, this is the one to get. With my cross country trip, mine has already paid for itself several times over.
Radar detectors for motorists were developed nearly at the same time as police started to use radar gun to pick drivers for speeding, motorists started to use the small mobile devices to "discover" radar signals in due time.
Beltronics USA
Motorists may find different brands on the market in big price range. For years, Beltronics (TM) products are among the most popular Beltronic Radar Detectors radar devices on the electronics market covering the diversified demand of the growing number of motorists. Beltronics offer eight radar detectors in the stores and online auction sites: 4 from the Vector family, 3 from the PRO series (two RX65 and one GX65) and the STi Driver.
All the 8 devices have some common features:
* POP Radar Alert
* Quick Release Windshield Mount
* AutoScan (TM) Filter (with the exception of Vector 940)
* AutoMute on/off
* Startup Fast/Slow
* SWS on/off
* Earphone Jack
* 360 degree Laser
STi Driver Detector
While each radar detector has 2 or 3 city-modes in the US, only 4 (Vector 995, RX65 Red, RX65 Blue and GX65) have Ku-band for Europe. The new STi Driver offers 9 Selectable Features, Dual Radar Antenna Design, Coiled SmartPlug(TM), High Performance Cord, External Amplified Speaker, Hard Travel Case and much more. The most important technical news is the use of TotalShield(TM) Technology. STi Driver is preferred by motorcyclists using it with wireless helmet display.
GX65
Beltronics USA names this product "the most sophisticated radar and laser detector in the world". GX65 delivers the best long-range warning on all radar bands (X, K, Superwide Ka, Ku). The laser sensors provide 360 degree laser protection. The built-in GPS powered technology offers permanent relief from false alarms. Its built-in database is a vault of information: the coordinates of the red light and fixed position speed camera locations in the United States and Canada are preloaded.

This thing, for the money, can not be beat. Yes, there are better radar’s out there on the market, but I don’t believe you will find one to beat this as far as it’s detection ability until you get over $300.
About a week after receiving mine I put it in my car and put my dad’s Passport 8500 directly next to it…same hieght and all. We took a trip to the city like this and every single time they would go off the Bel 940 would go off before the 8500…sometimes even 5 seconds earlier, which at 65mph is quite a good bit. I know the 8500 has been updated to the x50 and 9500, but it was a high dollar, best on the market radar when my dad bought it…and now this radar at less than half that cost does even better. My dad also has a V1 which does much better than this, but I always get plenty of alert from the V940 to get slowed down in time and am extremely happy with the purchase….blows away the old cobra I had and I don’t see the need for spending much more on a radar unless you want a bunch of bells and whisltes.
There is no reason to spend lots of money for a good detector. The Beltronics V940 is absolutely the most reliable detector I’ve ever had. It detects real K band a mile away from the cop. Lazer detection is very accurately as well.
After going through different brands of detectors, I finally found one that I can depend on.
I was very satisfied with my V940 until there was no longer any voice alerts which could not be corrected, even by re-setting the unit’s programming.
I called tech support and they told me I could send it in for repair at a cost of $89.95 which would include a 6 month warranty.
I ended up purchasing a new one after only 3 years use.
I have had a number of other radar detectors from other companies that I never had any problem with.
Instead of sending the old one for repair, I decided to buy a new one, although I did not believe I should have after only 3 years of use.
I am hoping this new one lasts longer than only 3 years, if it doesn’t, I will not buy another one.
Working as expected, Suggest buying the accessory visor clip and the power cord to run to the fuse box (if you want to hide the cord). The detector is a bit noisy on start up if left in the normal mode, but can be programmed to operate quieter and in different modes. The two accessory items are advertised being for the Escort detector but they work with the Bel V940. As with any detector, If you are caught by a laser or an instant on radar, your detector may warn you that you just got a ticket, so be vigilent to alerts react quickly and drive responsibly.
Mine went dead after about a year. No mistreatment, just did not wake up when I turned the car on.
Don’t buy junk from a company that sells junk (unless you just want to buy a new one every year).
I bought mine cheap from a person who was pissed for getting an expensive speeding ticket. Apparently, he thought that it would make him invincible. No radar detector can.
I would not say that it had saved me any tickets because I typically don’t drive over the limit. But I did pick up many early warnings and it gives me the peace in mind when I do need to catch up a schedule.
In my area, Ka band is the most common radar used by the cops. Whenever the Ka band is alarmed, it almost 100% real. Laser is also used but not very common. I’ve seen fewer than 5 times in a year but it is most lethal. By time you react to it, you are already locked on. I’d recommend Laser Veil to give you the extra 2 seconds needed to to react.
K and X bands were the most frequent alarms but 100% of them were false because of their location dependency. Fortunately, RX65 allows you to turn off any band. After I turned off K and X, RX-65 has become a lot more pleasant to use.
I’ve used many radar detectors, and have travelled cross-country many times for thousands of miles. This radar detector is amazing. in some cases, it would pick-up radar traps up to 3 miles away, no kidding. This thing just works, and works well. forget the other brands out there, Bel is the king!
Bought this as a replacement for one that was stolen. Great detection range, few false alarms. Need better windshield mount. Bought better replacement mount directly from Beltronics website. Highly recommend this product, much cheaper than first ticket.
Well, this little guy saved our butt when we were going to Canada through the bushy and dark New York upstate – the cop was hidden deep in the trees. and when the cop is far away behind you – it will also tell you… but otherwise its just as effective as eye sight i wouldn’t rely completely on it – even the most expensive one will not save your butt or the 360 degree one. Its a handy tool to have (also much hated) so hide it if you get pulled over lol :] goodluck!!!
I have a 2 units of the 995 and the RX65- all high end detectors from Beltronics. Got all three within a year time span and after 1.5-2years, they start saying “Service required” calibration issue. Looks like this a common problem with their high end detectors. Had to send 2 of the units in for repair and my last unit went out with the same problem.
The detectors work great when they dont have this issue.
I just purchased some accessories for my V995 from Beltronics. While on-line with them I asked about the warranty with Amazon. Here is the results of that on-line conversation (below). I have not received the unit yet, so cannot say much about it, but will report back later. Just wanted you to know that it does get a warranty when bought from Amazon direct.

you: Hi, I just ordered a cord and speaker for the 995. I did not buy the 995 from you, rather I just purchased it directly from Amazon do to price. I have read that you have declined warranty with Amazon. What gives. Amazon is a retailer just like others.

Brian: You have read incorrectly, Amazon is fine.
you: Thank you.

Contrary to to the published information, this detector comes with a SMART CORD in the box!
My Radar detector was purchased January 2010. One month later the detector stopped working and would not turn on. I verified it was not the power source or the cable; the unit was receiving power but would not turn on. Well I wasn’t too happy but I knew it was covered by a 1 Year warranty. I called up Beltronics only to find out that they DO NOT HONOR WARRANTY CLAIMS for products purchased from Amazon.com!!! Even worse, they wanted $79.99 + shipping to fix the unit. Needless-to-say, I find their level of customer service inadequate and disconcerting given the volume of product they sell through this site. I will not purchase another Beltronics product and would advise highly against it given their lack of professionalism in standing behind the quality of their own product.
Very happy with the performance of the product and especially the service provided by the vendor!
This is one of the best detectors I’ve ever owned. Only one problem (same one as every other one I’ve owned previously). In the early winter mornings when the sun is low on the horizon, the Laser alert goes off continuously! Bright sunshine emulates a Laser!
It’s been over a year since I got this product. I spent around 340$ to buy it and another 100$ hard wiring and perma-mounting it on my dash. Since then – this detector has saved me from dozens of tickets. Even with a conservative estimate of 150$ per ticket that works out to over 4000 $. More than 10 times my investment. If you like to push the speed limits – this is a must have!
The build quality is good, it’s easy to use, detection range is great. There are a lot of false positives (I always have it on highway mode), but you soon learn to tune out x band and listen for the Ka band and to a lesser extent K band. Of course – laser detection is iffy and rather pointless in my opinion. After all once you’ve been popped the fact becomes academic.
If you rely exclusively on this detector to warn you about speedtraps – this (or any other radar detector) might not help you much. Instead – if you use this as an additional early warning mechanism and augment this by staying alert, keeping an eye out for obvious speedtraps etc – this baby will pay off.
Now to the less savory details. Beltronics customer support sucks. Period. End of story. If you purchase this product from Beltronics directly – they hear you out grudgingly. If instead – you purchase this product from ANYONE else – they just tell you contact the seller. They will not answer even simple technical questions. They will not help you troubleshoot your device. They will not accept returns or honor their warranties. Their stock excuse being the large number of duplicates or rebuilt units flooding the market. The only recourse you have is to go back to the seller. Optionally I guess you could report them to the BBB.
In my case I was lucky, since the seller ([...]) was pretty helpful and replaced the defective piece right away. And I guess any product you get from Amazon has similar protection. BUT if you purchase it from a less helpful / influential seller – be prepared for the worst customer support ever.
With that said – this is a great product. Just be careful whom you buy it from.
